Our Purpose
The Sunnybank Trust was founded over 35 years ago by Tom Rhind-Tutt MBE, whose lived experience of being neurodivergent inspired a community movement that advocated for the ex-residents of the local, large, long stay hospitals, many of whom had learning disabilities.
Surrey still has one of the largest concentrations of people with learning disabilities, and a care system that in addition to being weakened by the current challenges, remains institutionalised in attitude and approach.
Today, The Sunnybank Trust thinks differently about having a learning disabilities. We look at what people can do, not what they can’t. We have evolved into a charity whose direction is determined by people living with learning disabilities. We are led by people with lived experience in the design and delivery of our services.
